Concertina Book<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Create a unique collapsible scrapbook that folds up like an accordion but each page expands to a large square that you can customize. Using origami folding techniques participants will make a square concertina book decorated with beautiful handmade Indian or Japanese paper that ties with a ribbon. Great for vacation memories! Materials provided, no experience necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n

Traditional Japanese Cherry Blossom Journal <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Usher in the summer by creating a traditionally bound Japanese Cherry Bloosom Journal.\u00c2\u00a0 Participants will create a soft cover, side-sewn journal bound withsilk thread using soft Japanese Kozo paper for the inside and beautiful handmade Japanese silkscreened paper for the cover. While creatingtheir journals, participants will also learn a brief history of Japanese bookbinding. Materials provided.<\/span><\/p>\n

Variations on Japanese Stab Bindings<\/span><\/p>\n

Traditional Japanese bookbinding features striking side sewn books with exposed stitching patterns.\u00c2\u00a0 Creating three small soft-cover books participants will learn to sew three different types of traditional Japanese bindings, the standard straight line stitch, the hemp leaf binding which creates a zigzag and the tortoise shell binding. \u00c2\u00a0All materials are provided, but participants should feel free to bring any paper they may want to use as a cover.<\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese Decoupage Eggs<\/span><\/p>\n

Create eye-catching Japanese ornaments by covering hollow eggshells with delicately patterned origami paper. Washi eggs are a traditional Japanese craft and look beautiful as Christmas ornaments or on the mantle. You won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t believe how easy they are to make, either! Participants will create two eggs to take home using beautiful handmade Japanese paper. All materials provided.<\/span><\/p>\n

Introduction to Pamphlet Stitch Binding<\/span><\/p>\n

The pamphlet stitch is the cornerstone of bookbinding, and a great introduction to sewing books \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it is also an elegant way to bind a handout rather than use staples. Participants will create three slim books with variations on the pamphlet stitch, creating a\u00c2\u00a0 three hole binding, four hole binding and five hole with wraparound. All materials are provided, but participants should feel free to bring any paper they may want to use as a cover, or rubber stamps for decorating their books.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do-si-dos: 2 Signature Pamphlet Stitch Bindings<\/span><\/p>\n

Building upon techniques learned in Introduction to Pamphlet Stitch Binding (although the class is not required to take this course), participants will learn quick and easy two-signature binding techniques. We will complete three different kinds of slim notebooks, one with a cover that opens on both sides. All materials will be provided, no experience necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n
