Cutting out paper lichens - Rock Wall Accordion Book Part 2 by Ruth Bleakley

Photo 1: Chelsea’s illustration shows a long rock wall, and the outlines of lichens along the wall – I wanted to give a close-up look at the lichens and I was inspired by Chelsea’s work in embroidered lichens, so I started by cutting little pieces of paper into the different “fronds” on the lichen.

Photo 2: Here are all the little organic shapes I cut out with scissors (I ended up needing about three times as many as you see here), I began arranging them into lichen shapes – you can see one emerging in the upper right.

Photo 3: Here’s a formative lichen – I decided I wanted a little pop of color and that’s where the thin bronze paper came in. I was inspired by some of the orange lichens in Chelsea’s embroidery work, which you can see below:
